"The major theatres of the country -- notably The St. Lawrence Centre, The Vancouver Playhouse and Stratford -- have reneged on their commitment to Canadian plays. This is particularly regrettable now, for Canada is at a point in history where she is begging for a cultural identity. As the American Dream dissolves itself into absurdity and ex-patriots rush to this virgin country, Canadians are less insistent on the U.S. or British stamp of approval before accepting their own artists, even though such playwrights as Herschel Hardin, John Herbert, Beverley Simons, Doug Bankson and Joseph Addison still are having their works produced in the U.S. before they achieve acceptance here.
"Playwrights must stop depending on our large regional playhouses to promote their work. As in politics, only a guerilla action will precipitate a cultural revolution. However different Toronto and New York may be, the coffee house and garage theatre of Off-Off Broadway which proliferated a vibrant whole sub-culture to contrast the commercialism of Broadway still offer us our best model. Rather than rail against the inflexibility of large concrete playhouses or the museum theatres of universities, we must build our theatre culture and let the others prove themselves irrelevant. Let's not wait for the government; let's do it!"
