The course is sponsored by the Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (CERES), University of Toronto, as an introductory, non-credit course for graduate students who plan to carry out research in archives in Russia or NIS or work with Russian archival documents in Western repositories.

The course will take place in January-February, 2006, for six weeks, 1 class per week, 2 hours per class.
Instructor: Dr. Olga E. Glagoleva.

Instruction will be in English but the reading knowledge of Russian is required.

The course will introduce students to the organization and structure of archives and libraries in Russia and NIS, access to records, working rules and conditions, archival terminology, basic finding aids, and general techniques of reading a manuscript and preparing it for publication. A special attention will be given to the Internet resources for archival studies and to a hands-on practice in archival research.
A verification letter will be issued to the students on the completion of the course.

Eligibility: reading knowledge of Russian, graduate status in one of the disciplines of Russian studies or in the CERES program. To sign up for the course, students should present a brief letter of introduction, indicating future research plans, present status, knowledge of Russian, and any other pertinent information to Dr. Glagoleva by e-mail.
