As the above quote implies, the Bookman chronicled the visual
arts, in the form of exhibition reviews (e.g. the OSA, RCA annual
shows) and articles on such artists as Arthur Lismer and C.W.
Jefferys.
In addition to its book reviews and author profiles, The Bookman
was an important forum for the publication of Canadian poems:
authors of these and other works included Dorothy Livesay, J.E.H.
Macdonald, Charles G.D. Roberts, A.Y. Jackson, Mary Quayle Innis
and E.J. Pratt.

Goblin

.satire, caricature and dependable literary criticism."
By the end of its first volume, the Goblin boasted a 7,000 circulation
and was distributed by American News Co. at newstands across
Canada.
J. W. Bengough cartoons appear in some 1921 issues. Stephen Leacock
was on the editorial board and contributed several pieces to
the paper. Several of the staff (Richard Taylor and the illustrator
Aladjalov) were later contributors to the New Yorker. |

This rare periodical, complete but for August 1935 issue, is
a window on Toronto's cultural life in the mid-1930's. Articles
include "Seen at the Beaux Arts Ball [photos], "Dominion
Drama Festival (Apr. 1935), "Art of the little theatre in
early Toronto" (Apr. 1935), and "National opera company
for Canada" (Apr. 1935).
Richard Taylor, later a staff cartoonist for The New Yorker,
was a contributor, as he was to the earlier Goblin (see above).
Includes three-part series on Toronto tabloids ("how
and where they started"). |

An original microform publication photographed from typescripts
in the collection of the Finnish Organization of Canada. These
works, written by first generation immigrants to Canada and the
U.S., were circulated in typescript form and performed at Finnish
Organization of Canada halls in Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, South
Porcupine, Port Arthur, Sudbury, Toronto, Vancouver, Sointula,
B.C., and other Finnish communities.
In addition to being a primary source on early twentieth-century
Finnish immigration to North America, the collection will also
be of interest to historians of radical political movements.
